About The Role

IP Counsel forms part of the IP Enforcement, Brands and Licensing team, within global the IP & Product Strategy function of Dyson Legal. This role reports to our Senior IP Counsel within the IP Enforcement, Brands & Licensing team.

You will have day-to-day responsibility for the following areas of Intellectual Property & Product Strategy (IP&PS) activity:

  • Global IP Enforcement and Litigation
  • Global Brand Protection and Anti-Counterfeiting
  • IP Licensing and Agreements

Other elements of the role include:

Operational

  • Managing IP disputes around the world, including direct conduct of lower-level IP disputes, and instructing and managing  external counsel in relation to more significant disputes and litigation.

  • Working with external partners to enforce Dyson’s IP online, to support effective brand protection and provide strategic value to Dyson by supporting the sale of genuine Dyson products.

  • Anti-counterfeiting activities including:-

Managing investigations and enforcement to tackle the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit products

Promoting pro-active enforcement by intermediaries such as law enforcement, customs officers, online marketplace operators and logistics providers.

  • Contributing to activities of the Centre of Excellence for Product Litigation.

  • Conducting analysis of competitor products to assess IP infringement.

  • Being a subject matter expert in IP infringement, providing advice and guidance to internal stakeholders.

  • Contributing to IP licensing and agreement activities including advising on and drafting IP agreements and IP aspects of other commercial agreements.

  • Providing or contributing to regular reports to internal stakeholders in relation to IP disputes, brand protection and anti-counterfeiting.

  • Operational reporting to Head of IP Enforcement, Brands & Licensing.

Strategic

  • Contributing to IP enforcement and brand protection strategies.

  • Contributing to IP Enforcement, Brands and Licensing team strategic goals which align with and contribute to the IP&PS function-level strategies.

About You

You’ll be a qualified solicitor in England & Wales with around 1-3 years PQE, in an intellectual property role. You’ll have a background in both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters, ideally including experience in anti-counterfeiting investigations & enforcement and in managing litigation in other jurisdictions.

 

This is a varied, hands-on and unique role with interesting, fast-moving global work. You’ll need to be highly commercial, dynamic, innovative and able to challenge the status quo. You’ll be advising on large, high-profile projects involving exciting, cutting-edge technology so thinking on your feet, managing stakeholders and driving change will be key. 

 

Other key requirements include:

  • Experience and/or interest in design and engineering, and an aptitude to learn and understand technical discussions.
  • Ability to identify legal risk amongst complex technical facts and propose strategic mitigation solutions.
  • Exceptional communication skills - with a strong ability to interact and build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Good awareness of the role of a legal function in a large, global business and the ability to contribute actively to supporting the business to make informed decisions.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision in a very fast-paced, constantly changing environment.
  • Confidence to challenge decisions and actions, escalating to senior members of Dyson Legal as appropriate.
  • Solid collaboration and team-working skills.
  • In-house experience/exposure will be an advantage.
